In the 1992 version of Dracula, what was the significance of the ring of blue flames outside Dracula's Castle?

I looked on line and it says that Mina calls them up when Dracula is being chased back to the Castle in the final scenes, but the flames were there when Harker first goes to see Dracula to sell him Carfax Abbey. Mina wasn't there then as she was still in London unaware of anything!! Does anyone know what this ring of blue flames represents??!!

It's a protection over the castle-- that's why at the end Dracula is in such a rush to get inside his gates before sundown-- he has to be near that earth (soil) that is in his castle. Also, I believe it not only gives Dracula his strength, but anyone who crosses the blue fire to enter is more vulnerable to his power--hence, how Keanu Reeves' character becomes prisoner once he crosses into the castle and, at first, abides by "the rules" of the Count.
